Individuals who are interested in becoming a motorcycle mechanic may enroll in a career diploma, certificate, or associate degree program. The curriculum within these programs may provide students with mechanical, customer service, and project management skills required to work in the industry. A career diploma may be completed within a few months and may provide the basics of motorcycle repair. A certificate may take one to two years to complete and may allow students to earn a motorcycle mechanics certification credential. An associate degree program may take two years to complete and provide in-depth training on all aspects of motorcycle maintenance. Popular motorcycle mechanic courses may include the following:

  • Internal Combustion Engine Theory
  • Four-Stroke Engines
  • Basic Electrical Theory
  • Ignition Systems
  • Brake Systems
  • Frame and Suspension

Those who wish to pursue a career as a motorcycle mechanic may be required to complete one to two years of on-the-job training. This training may include a Motorcycle Repairer apprenticeship which is completed under the direction of experienced mechanics. As a result of on-the-job experience, students may obtain pertinent job skills including attention to detail, dependability, manual dexterity, and decision-making skills. In addition, students can learn basic mechanical tasks, such as changing spark plugs and identifying engine parts. As they gain experience, students may move on to more difficult tasks such as engine overhauls.

License & Certification

Motorcycle mechanics may choose to pursue voluntary certification from various motorcycle manufacturers. Students may elect to obtain this certification to obtain employment at a specific manufacturer of motorcycles, such as Harley-Davidson and Honda. This credential, while not required, may increase the opportunity for employment at those specific retailers and manufacturers. Students interested in obtaining these certifications may do so through manufacturer electives taken through their motorcycle mechanic program.

Job Outlook & Salary

Upon graduation from a motorcycle mechanic program, students may find careers as a motorcycle technician, service technician, custom bike builder, motorsports technician, and ATV technician. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for those pursuing a career as a motorcycle mechanic are expected to increase by 21% from 2010-2020. This increase may be due to increased motorcycle use, thus the need for more mechanics. The BLS also reported that motorcycle mechanics earned a median annual salary of $31,790 and an hourly wage of $15.29 as of 2012.
